Everything we do in daily life is very much interlinked; our interests, our work, our hobbies and pursuits should not be viewed in separate compartments. The skills we put into practice and the lessons we learn very much overlap our between professional and social lives.
When one pursues an aspiration with dedication...
...such as a sport or hobby, there are usually facilities or opportunities to practice and hone ones skills. Our progress and improvement is a way of measuring our success but also measuring our traits as person; motivation, dedication, resilience – which ever buzz words you care to use. Logically then, the workplace therefore should offer opportunities and facilities to practice skills or traits to enable you and therefore your employer to succeed and fulfill your own potential to a greater extent.
An organisation must pursue wider inclusive agendas
With all the scandals that have rocked the business world and the last four years of recession, it is fair to say that businesses have the lost the license to operate in ways they used to and want to. This is because the public has realized that companies need to do more than just hiring, creating, innovating, growing and paying tax. They in short need to contribute to a wider set of social objectives both citizens and employees will value. Some label that the three Ps – Profit, Purpose and Planet while some offer the three Cs – Cash, Customers and Community. When citizens and employees do not value your propositions and products they vote with their feet.
Business in its purest form is just another social institution
In order then, for companies to successful navigate the murky mire of public opinion and thrive commercially, the best talent need to be eager to work for them. Successful companies will always attract the best employees just as top sports clubs attract the top players. This is largely based around the employer’s investment in their people, in career development, and in the bigger stage or opportunity a successful organization can offer its top talent for personal and professional growth.
Authenticity also matters
A business should stand for something, it must have purpose and values. Branding and reputation lie in narrative. Where does this narrative start? It starts with one’s own employees. If training and facilities are provided for self-improvement and the company is actively seen to be investing and caring for their employees as well as their shareholders, they will be infinitely more successful in creating the unified, innovative and productive community.
The more highly a company is spoken of from the inside, the more people want to work there. This will invariable attract the top candidates and allows one to accelerate the growth and output of the organization.
